Academic Quiz Team Guidebook and Syllabus
2009-2010 The will to win is almost as important as the will to prepare to win. - Ken Macha, Former Manager of the Oakland Athletics Welcome to the THS Academic Quiz Team! By joining this team, you are not only going to have fun, but a great deal of success will come your way this year, and for years to come. You will become a part of a long and storied tradition of excellence as a part of our team. It will also look very good on college applications. Several alumni of our team have gone on to play College Quiz Bowl. Many have graduated at the top of their class. There are many ways you may have come to join this team: word of mouth, encouragement from a friend or teacher, or heard an announcement. In any case, the amount of success you have in this sport is equivalent to the amount of work you put in. I will provide the opportunity, but you must be ready to succeed! We have already begun to build the team for next year and future years. Your commitment is essential.
Team History The Tippecanoe HS Academic Quiz Team program was established in the 1995 fall semester. Our first team participated in two tournaments, one of them being the television show, High-Q. We had five people on that first team, with no tryouts, no buzzer system to practice on, and we only practiced about ten times all year. 6. HAVE FUN!!! We all are doing this ultimately because we love it – enjoy yourselves! The Academic Quiz Team is an inclusive team. What this means is that people may come and go as their schedules allow. Quiz team is a year-round activity, beginning in September and going into June. Many of you have other commitments, especially in school work. Set your priorities in a responsible manner. No one will ever be cut from the team due to other commitments. However, your attendance at tournaments and competitions will be dictated by your attendance and performance at practice. Each team member should try to be at practice at least once a week, and taking responsibility for one of three areas: Social Studies, Science, or Literature. We already have commitments from many students. Once you declare a major, you have to stick with it for the rest of this year. This will determine which quizzes you will be taking at practice each Thursday. Declared Major Areas of Study: These are the areas which you will take subject quizzes in, usually on Thursdays before practice. If you need packets of study materials, just ask! Literature - Catie Haas, Emily Ash Social Studies - Josh Brown, Tyler Turnbill, Cameron Slifer, Schae Schaper, Max Witeof, Steven Chaney Science- Joe Gauthier, Trisha Makley, Branda Peebles, Drew Walling, James Persing
Undeclared/Undecided - Katie Fahy, Hali Brown, Katherine Roan, Christina Shepherd, Joshua Bellas, Thomas Gaier, Erin Gauthier, Samantha Bonifas, Abby Allen
Varsity and Junior Varsity teams will be arranged based on a combination of attendance at practice, performance in your chosen major area, quiz grades, and experience. This status is subject to change. I will try as hard as I can to play every member in every tournament, but we are often limited by invitation, transportation, and team size. Please ask either of the coaches if you have questions about your status on the team. This team has five basic rules, and they are easy to remember. They are:
2. Respect your teammates. Encourage them when you can. Expect the same in return.
3. Respect your opponents. No taunting or poor sportsmanship will be allowed. I expect that you will shake hands with your opponents at the conclusion of every match, no matter the outcome. No foul language, please.
4. Respect the equipment. Buzzers cost hundreds of dollars, paid for by the taxpayers, they are hard to get, and harder to repair. Be gentle!
5. Respect the people working at the tournaments we attend. Readers, scorekeepers timers are all volunteers, and they will be impressed with your sportsmanship if we act nicely. Thank them for reading or working the tournament in every round you play. These are rules of basic courtesy and good manners, and I do not anticipate any problems. Remember, we are ambassadors representing not only our school, but our community. Any infractions may result in the team forfeiting matches, or worse, not being invited back to the tournament. If you forget one or more of the following rules, you will be reminded gently at first. Upperclassmen and varsity members should help enforce the rules. If poor conduct continues, you will be asked to leave.
For Parents Each student will be asked to pay a portion of fess for hotels, meals, etc. If we qualify for nationals, we will have to think about additional fundraising work. However, the school will pay all entrance fees for all tournaments. We will not sell candy, fruit, etc. Currently, our only fundraisers are the Tippecanoe Academic Challenge on November 3rd, and hosting the OAC regional tournament in April. We need as many parents as possible to work these events. You can either work as a reader, scorekeeper/moderator, or in concession sales.
All team members will be expected to attend the OAC Regional in late April!!
From time to time (as your child is nearing a tournament), you will receive permission slips regarding that event. I will also try to update you on the status of the team in the same correspondence. Think of these as short newsletters. I will also send home a longer mid-year report which will update you on the status of the team. If any parents want to attend tournaments as spectators, they are more than welcome. Also, if any of you wish to arrange alternate transportation to a tournament, please contact me and we can make arrangements. Finally, if you have any questions at all about anything regarding the team or your child, please contact me at the school (667-8448, ext 2763) and I will return your call as soon as possible. These are not set in stone. Some tournaments come and go. We attended 25 tournaments last year, which made for a very busy year. We will continue to stress quality over quantity this year. Practices will be held on Mondays and Thursdays after school, from 2:45-4:30 pm. The Monday practice may be divided for JV only (Freshmen, Sophs and inexperienced Juniors). Thursdays are open to anyone and every student, regardless of status. Everyone will keep a notebook on the team. One of the coaches will examine them from time to time. You need to put everything quiz team related into your notebook. I recommend purchasing a three ring binder for this purpose. You may begin by putting this packet of information into your binder. Other things to include are old quizzes, lists of information that is given to you, questions you have written, tournament results, and blank paper. Practice stats are kept in the following fashion. TWO points are credited for every correct answer given before the question is finished. ONE point will be deducted for an incorrect answer if the question is interrupted. ONE point will be credited for every correct answer after the question is finished being read. I will not be making practice results common knowledge all of the time. If you want to know how you are doing, please see me and we can talk at any time about your standing on the team.
Shirts and Apparel Shirts: We will be purchasing team shirts this year, since we have barely half of the team who have shirts already. You will be encouraged to wear the shirts to tournaments whenever possible. If you don’t have a shirt, you should wear something that has school colors or the school emblem on it. If we are on TV or competing in other formal events that do not allow our team shirts, we will wear dress formally. We have been invited to appear on Channel 7’s High-Q. We have had great success in the past on this show, winning it in 1997, 2005, and 2007 and finishing second in 1998 and 2006. Participation on the show is by invitation only, and although we apply every year, we are not always chosen. High-Q is taped usually on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday nights. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
