!!!!!SPORTS PHYSICALS-Important Information!!!!!

Reports of sports-related illness and unexpected deaths in recent years have pushed many to reassess the

best approach to offering student athletes pre-participation physical examinations (PPPEs). The American

Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Sports Medicine,

American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and

the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine all recognize the important role of PPPEs;

however, there has been much debate regarding the effectiveness of current screening methods for athlete

safety and participation clearance.

Based on this evaluation, Upper Miami Valley Medical Center and Premier Health Sports Medicine have

determined that current requirements for sports physicals can no longer be met in the traditional stationbased format. As a result, Premier Health physicians will no longer administer station-based PPPEs at

our school. Please note that physicals completed prior to August 1, 2013, remain valid for the 2013-

2014 school/athletic year. The medical community believes that student athletes’ health interests are

better served in a private, one-on-one, physical examination with their own caregiver, such as a

pediatrician or primary care physician.

While this change may seem inconvenient, it is absolutely necessary to ensure the health and well-being of all

of our student athletes. Previous methods, which were established some 20 years ago, simply cannot meet

the current needs of our student athletes. If you have any questions, please contact Athletic Director Matt

Shomper at 669-6364.
