Character Education Program for Nevin Coppock Elementary WOW Nevin Coppock Elementary’s Character Education Program enlists the help of our students to personalize and make meaningful words such as respect, dignity, and trust. A word of the week (WOW) is selected and students from one classroom present the word daily on the morning announcements. Each presentation generally includes the word, its definition, and several examples. Most classrooms are represented by two students each day who speak to the entire school about the word and give examples of how the word relates to them in their daily lives. Each classroom has two or more assigned dates for the school year. Not only is it exciting for our students to be part of the morning announcements, it also provides the opportunity for the classroom teachers to discuss the word of the week with their students. Through reinforcement from classmates, the character education words are then used in appropriate ways throughout the week. With students' input, there have been be some interesting interpretations, and this program has helped to personally involve our students. Our motto at Nevin Coppock Elementary is recited every day at the end of announcements by the entire school: I am reliable, I am respectful, I am responsible. |
