Mrs. Shelby Walters

My name is Shelby Walters and I am beginning my 2nd year teaching 2nd and 3rd grade Art at Broadway Elementary!  Although I am somewhat new to Broadway, I am not new to the district as I was the art teacher at Nevin Coppock previously.

As a child, I was introduced to art at a very young age by my grandmother, whom was a painter.   I also loved playing “school,” and helping my younger brother with his homework, so when it came time to choose my major, I knew exactly the profession I wanted to pursue. In 2008,  I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education with a concentration in painting from Wright State University and in 2010, a Master’s Degree from Grand Canyon University in Secondary Education.

I first began teaching in 2009 at a small art museum in Springfield where I taught children from ages 2 to 12. From there, I moved to Dayton Public Schools, teaching Kindergarten to 6th grade. Although I love teaching children of all ages, I am very happy to be focusing on the primary grades, as they are new to education and are so eager to learn and explore!

Although I was born and raised in Springfield (Kenton Ridge Alumni), I currently live in Englewood with my husband Bret, our two daughters, Jonnah age 11 and Adalyn (Addy) age 8, and our two little dogs Bella and Lucy.  Addy is attending Broadway this year as a third grader!  We both feel fortunate and very excited to be in the same building again this year!

Throughout the school year, please be sure to periodically check out our  Broadway Art Studio facebook page! (The link is at the bottom of this message) Here, you will find various announcements from the art room, each art lesson, and how you can help continue our classroom discussions at home.

Looking forward to another great year!!

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at Broadway or via my email at  You can also send a message to the Broadway Art Facebook page as well!
