• Welcome to the TMS School Counselor Website!

The School Counselor takes an active role in providing academic, career and personal development support and assistance to all students at Tippecanoe Middle School.

Mrs. Toohey works with students, parents and teachers to enable students to make the most of their opportunities and educational experience at Tippecanoe Middle School. As a school counselor, Mrs. Toohey facilitates individual counseling to enable students to become aware of responsibilities, skills, resources and abilities needed to become lifelong learners, productive workers and successful citizens.

The role of the school counselor is ever changing. Formerly known as Guidance Counselors, School counselors are licensed educators with a minimum of a master's degree in school counseling, making them uniquely qualified to address all students' academic, career and social/emotional development needs by designing, implementing, evaluating, and enhancing a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student success (American School Counselor Association, 2016). Through leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school counselors create comprehensive school counseling programs that focus on academic success and student outcomes, teach student competencies, and deliver direct student services through a variety of identified professional competencies (American School Counselor Association, 2016). Students are encouraged to take advantage of the counseling services at Tippecanoe Middle School and consult with their counselor regarding social/personal concerns, as well as future planning. When students need to see their counselor. students should come to the office to request an appointment by completing a "request form". The counselor will then see the student at a time that least interferes with the student’s academic classes. If there is an emergency situation the student will be seen without an appointment.

All teachers are encouraged to refer students to the counselors whenever there is a concern or need.
